The Margaret I. King Library closed for a multi-year renovation project in May 2026. Library services normally provided by the Special Collections Research Center and the King Library Annex have been relocated to other campus libraries while the renovations are in progress. We look forward to the opportunity to modernize this central campus landmark and appreciate your patience as service speeds may be slower or some physical items may not be accessible during the renovation.

Service Points

Special Collections Research Assistance

In-person research assistance usually provided out of the Breckinridge Research Room will be available in the Little Fine Arts & Design Library.

Monday/Friday access may be arranged with advance notice. Contact scrc@uky.edu to inquire. 

Teaching With Primary Sources

Teaching collections of maps, archives, and rare books have been retained for instructional purposes.

Requests for library instruction using primary source materials should be made two to three weeks in advance. 

Digital Scholarship & Data Services

Digital scholarship and data services provided by The Stacks will be available in Young Library during the renovation.

Nunn Center for Oral History

King Library Press

The King Library Press will continue operations in Young Library beginning Fall 2026.

Accessing Collections

STEM Materials

Many of the circulating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics materials previously held in the King Library Annex have moved to the Young Library stacks and can be requested through Infokat.

For assistance accessing and locating STEM materials, contact our STEM Librarian Team.

Maps

With the exception of the Aerial Maps, materials in the Gwen Curtis Map Collection previously held on the Fourth Floor of the King Library Annex will be unavailable during the renovation.

Aerial Maps may be requested through Infokat.

Rare Books

Rare books are available through Infokat.

Unavailable

With the exception of our rare books, most special collections books will be unavailable during the renovation. 

The following items/services will also be unavailable:

  • Historic Map Collection
  • Gwen Curtis Map Collection
  • Some oversized archival materials
  • Onsite microfilm viewing (reproductions can be requested)
