Return borrowed items on time to avoid fines and to ensure that other library users have access to the materials they need.

How to Avoid Fines & Fees

  • Review our Borrowing & Renewal policies
  • Track your due dates in InfoKat Discovery
  • Do not loan your borrowed items to a third party
  • Make sure your email address is up to date in the Library System. You will receive courtesy notices when your due date is near and when your loans are overdue

Fines for Overdue Materials

  • Book fines: no overdue fines for returned books!
  • Reserve fines: $.60 per hour, per item, per day
  • Recall fines: $2.00 per item, per day

Paying Fines

With the exception of lost Law Library books and art equipment, fines payments can be made:

  • Online using this form. Payment methods accepted: American Express, Discover, Mastercard, Visa, and Google Pay
  • By check or money order. Make payable to the University of Kentucky and send to Fine Payment, Circulation Desk, William T. Young Library, 401 Hilltop Avenue, Lexington, KY 40506-0456

Please note: Credit card payments are no longer accepted at the Circulation Desk or via telephone. Library patrons must use a personal device to pay online; we are not permitted to enter credit card information using a university owned device.

Please contact us at circdesk@uky.edu for additional questions.

Returning Overdue Items

Please return overdue library materials to the Circulation Desk in person during library hours.

Replacing Lost or Damaged Items

After 45 days overdue, the library system will declare an item lost and assess a default lost replacement cost to your account. If a lost item is later returned, the replacement cost will be removed at the time the book is checked in.

If an item is returned in a damaged condition, the library will determine the cost of repair and charge accordingly. For items that cannot be repaired, the library will charge the borrower for the replacement cost.

To avoid paying replacement costs, you have the option of replacing the book on your own. It must be the same edition as the lost item and in good condition. Please contact the library for the item's ISBN number.
