It’s National Medical Librarians Month, and we’re inviting all faculty, staff, and students to help us celebrate at the Medical Center Library Open House!

Join us in the Medical Center Library (MCL) for coffee, donuts, and fun games on Tuesday, October 15 from 12pm to 2pm. Our team of medical librarians will be on hand to lead tours and showcase the many ways we can support your teaching, learning, and research.

We’re also excited to demonstrate the capabilities of two of our newest resources:

  • BioDigital Human, an interactive 3D software platform for visualizing every element of human anatomy, along with hundreds of models of diseases, operations, and treatments.
  • JoVE: Journal of Visualized Experiments, an incredible resource with over 18,000 videos illustrating concepts and laboratory methods from across the sciences.

If you can’t make it to the event, you can still explore the services, resources, spaces, and people that make up the Medical Center Library below, or contact us at mclib@uky.edu to ask us anything!

Research & Teaching Services

As medical librarians, we facilitate access to health information essential for teaching, research, and patient care across the health sciences. No matter your discipline or research specialty, we can help you track down the information and resources you need to excel in your educational goals, scholarly pursuits, or clinical practice.

We conduct literature searches for UK faculty, clinicians, researchers, nurses, and staff and provide individual search strategy and research consultations for students. Let us know what you’re looking for

We can also help you learn new tools and techniques to improve and expand your research competencies through our Research Workshop Series. Held every semester, these free, virtual workshops cover a wide range of topics, including introductory tutorials for commonly used applications and software, advanced search training for popular databases, data management best practices, and the ins and outs of systematic reviews. All of our past workshops are available to view in our archive.

Speaking of systematic reviews: we offer several levels of assistance – from consultations to collaborations – for a variety of evidence synthesis projects. While our assistance is currently on hiatus, we encourage you to continue submitting your requests. We will put you on our waitlist and contact you with further details. Find out more about the process on our Systematic Reviews Research Guide.

On top of our research services, we also provide instructional support in the classroom. We can work with you to develop training sessions and embedded instruction tailored directly to your courses. Additionally, we offer curriculum support to faculty across the health sciences and lead library orientations. To find out more about our teaching services, contact us at mclib@uky.edu

Resources & Collections

In an information-overloaded world, knowing where to locate trustworthy sources is essential business: especially when the care of patients is on the line. Medical librarians are experts at helping you sift through the vast information ecosystem for just the right tool, journal, citation, or source.

The MCL provides easy access to popular Health Sciences Databases and an exhaustive list of Health Sciences Journals, sortable by discipline and specialty as well as by journal rank. Many health sciences databases serve as point-of-care decision support tools and contain information to assist diagnosis and treatment across medical specialties.

Among our most valuable resources are our Health Sciences Research Guides, created by librarians to provide in-depth overviews of subjects, research processes, and special topics:

  • Our Discipline-Focused Guides provide in-depth guidance to accessing electronic resources and research materials for all of the health science colleges.
  • Our Research Help guides will point you to resources that support every stage of the research process, from literature review to publication.
  • Our Special Topic Guides provide access to selected databases and clinical support resources for researchers, students, and clinicians across their respective fields.

Spaces & Technology

Located in the Basement and First Floor of the William R. Willard Medical Education Building, the MCL offers ample room for individual and group study, along with publicly available computers, a computer lab, and a media viewing station.

The two floors are dotted with individual study carrels and study pods for quiet study; large, open spaces with couches and tables for low-volume group study; and an enclosed room (M77-79) with group tables and a whiteboard wall for conversational study.

After-hours badge access to the Basement level of the MCL is available for all students enrolled in the six health sciences colleges. Reservations for the private study rooms are open to medical students and administered directly through the College of Medicine.

During open hours, you can find us at the front desk on the First Floor, where we will be happy to answer any questions or help with quick literature searches.
