UK Libraries is pleased to announce a new publication from the OER Grant Program

Semantic Web Development is an open textbook written by Dr. C. Sean Burns, Associate Professor in the School of Information Science, freely available to students and teachers both inside and outside UK.

Burns was a grant recipient in the 2024 cycle. He developed the book for his annual Semantic Web Development course.

Intended for undergraduate students who are new to web development, the book focuses on entry-level topics such as HTML5, CSS3, and JSON-LD.

A living document, the book will be updated frequently to address changes in technology. Dr. Burns invites other teachers to adopt and adapt the text for use in their own courses.

The OER Grant Program supports the adoption and creation of open educational resources (OER) for use in UK courses. OER are class materials – including textbooks, assignments, podcasts, slides, videos, and more – that are free for anyone to use, share, or revise. Because of the flexibility enabled by Creative Commons licensing, OER can be adapted and combined to suit the specific needs of a course.

Available to students at no cost, OER increase access to higher education by eliminating the financial burden of traditional commercial textbooks. Since its launch in 2016, the program has awarded 82 grants across 42 departments.
