Textbooks & Open Resources

Open Educational Resources

Open educational resources (OER) are materials used for educational purposes that are free for anyone to access. They are also licensed to enable uses such as sharing and revising. OER can be textbooks, syllabi, test banks, homework assignments, articles, podcasts, videos, slides, and more.

  • Find open textbooks and other OER to adopt for your courses
  • Create brand new materials to fill gaps in your discipline
  • Apply for the OER Grant Program to get funding for writing or adopting resources
  • Contact the Affordable Course Content Librarian for more information on finding, using, and creating OER

Library Textbook Collection

This collection includes textbooks or required materials that the library can offer as free eBooks to all students. It does not cover all UK-assigned textbooks or required materials, only those the library can provide.

Course Reserves

Course reserves may consist of materials owned by the library, such as books or journals, or personal materials owned by the instructor, including photocopies, lecture notes, and online resources or digital files.

Placing Materials on Reserve

We accept requests for both physical reserves and electronic reserves. To place material on reserve, whether you are beginning a new list or adding to an existing list, please fill out the Course Reserves Request form.

Please note, requests are:

  • Processed in the order they are received
  • May be subject to deadlines to ensure availability during high-volume request periods
  • Accepted any time during the semester

For help with special orders, contact your Subject Support Team. Reserved materials may require copyright permission.

Textbook Scholarships

The David Mudry Memorial Scholarship is a one-time $1,000 award to help offset the cost of books and course materials for students with unmet financial need. Visit our Research Awards & Grants page for more information.
