On Saturday, February 24, 2024, UK Libraries participated in the Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering’s 101st annual Engineer’s Day (E-Day) open house event.

The event featured over 100 interactive displays, demonstrations, and exhibits set up throughout the engineering complex, and was attended by nearly 3,500 Kentucky students and families. Exhibitors included major corporations, government agencies, UK departments, and UK student organizations.

Among them were UK librarians promoting the resources, expertise, and research and teaching support services available through the Science & Engineering Library (SEL).

STEM librarians Valerie PerryHelene GoldHelen Bischoff, and several SEL student workers handed out engineering-themed materials and spoke about the library to hundreds of attendees.

“We enjoyed meeting K-12 students and parents from throughout Kentucky at E-Day,” said Perry. “It was a fun event and a wonderful opportunity to help attendees understand how UK Libraries supports all Kentuckians.”

UK Libraries’ collections and support services span all fields of engineering and technology, whether your research interest lies in biosystems, bridges, robots, or rockets.

Users can find their way into the field by using the Engineering Research Guide. The guide provides orienting information about popular databases and research tools, patent and trademark information, standards and specifications resources, and gray literature across a variety of engineering and science fields.

UK Libraries also subscribes to over two dozen engineering databases, including Compendex, the most comprehensive bibliographic database in the field. Compendex covers all engineering disciplines and includes millions of bibliographic citations and abstracts from thousands of engineering journals and conference proceedings.

Along with its engineering collections, the SEL also holds materials supporting learning, teaching, and research across the fields of astronomy, chemistry, earth and environmental science, mathematics, physics, and statistics. Find a complete list of Science & Engineering Databases arranged by discipline, or browse our Science & Engineering Research Guides for more in-depth information on research materials and electronic resources.

STEM subject librarians offer resources and guidance at any stage of the research process, and provide tailored research support to all UK students, faculty, and staff. STEM librarians can help users:

  • Develop research topics and hone research questions
  • Select databases, materials, and resources and navigate the research process
  • Conduct literature reviews and perform advanced searches
  • Share research and communicate findings

STEM librarians also offer teaching support to all UK instructors.
