Requesting Items

To borrow materials from other libraries

  • Sign into ILLiad with your linkblue credentials
  • Select the type of material you would like to request from the main menu
  • Provide complete and accurate bibliographic information for your item
  • Use a separate request form for each item you are requesting

Additionally, links to ILLiad are available via most databases through the View Now UK button, allowing you to make requests for items as you browse. If you come across an item to which UK Libraries does not have access, click “Request for Interlibrary Loan” and the appropriate request form will autofill.

Verifying Requests

Lending libraries require that all requests be verified, so please be sure to provide your source of citation on your request form. Global library catalogs such as WorldCat and the Center for Research Libraries Online Catalog can be used to verify the location of requested materials and expedite the ILL process.

Costs

UK libraries will absorb up to $40 for acquiring loaned materials or reproductions. If the cost exceeds $40, the ILL staff will contact you to see if you are willing to absorb the extra cost. Rush service may often generate extra costs from the supplying library.

Users who keep material extremely overdue will be charged a $20 non-refundable fee. Users will also be held responsible for any fees incurred by the supplying library while borrowed material is in their possession, including overdue fines and charges for damaged or lost items.

Pick-up & Return

You will be notified by email when your requested materials have arrived. Through your ILLiad account, you may designate any of our library locations as your preferred pickup site, and pick up and return materials during their regular hours of service. If hours of service are limited at the pickup site, returns may be made to the Young Library Circulation Desk.

An item that has been restricted to “library use only” will generally be available only in Young Library. You may use the item as many times as you wish during the duration of the loan. After each use, please return the item to the library’s service desk. You may request that the item be kept on the pickup shelf for later use and not returned to the lending library.

Please do not remove the blue band around the cover of the book, as the information on the band is essential for clearing your transaction.

Renewing ILL Items

Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library and are not guaranteed, so please make reading your interlibrary loan material a priority. If a renewal is necessary, you may submit an electronic renewal request using ILLiad or by contacting the ILL Office. An additional two weeks will be requested. If the institution does not grant the renewal, the item must be returned immediately. Only one renewal may be requested per item.

Borrowing Materials from UK

Those patrons not associated with UK must contact their local library's Interlibrary Loan service to acquire material from UK Libraries. Requests should be submitted to the W.T. Young Library Interlibrary Loan Lending Service.

Information about codes, acceptable methods of transmission, lending policies, and fees and billing may be found on our Borrowing Materials from UK page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are the conditions for ILL services established?

The conditions for use of the Interlibrary Loan services are set by the Interlibrary Loan Code of the American Library Association, US Copyright Law, and by regulations of individual lending libraries.

Please contact a librarian with any questions about our Interlibrary Loan services. We are happy to assist you in locating the materials you need.

Who may use Interlibrary Loan?

All University of Kentucky faculty, emeritus faculty, staff, students, and visiting scholars may use ILL services, provided they have no outstanding library fines or fees.

Young Library Interlibrary Loan serves all colleges and departments, with the exception of the College of Law, which is served by Law Library Interlibrary Loan.

How long will it take for my materials to arrive?

Most material may be acquired within two weeks, though some material may arrive more quickly. International requests may take more than three months to obtain. Always indicate any deadlines you may have on the ILL form and plan on submitting your requests well in advance.

Are there limitations to the kinds of materials that can be borrowed?

Yes. Materials generally not available for loan include pre-1800 imprints, rare books, newspapers and manuscripts, some PhD and Masters theses, standards, audiovisual materials, genealogical material, textbooks, and e-books. Additionally, photocopies of certain material protected by copyright and materials in our collection with circulation restrictions cannot be obtained. To acquire leisure and recreational materials, please consult your local public library.

Please ask a librarian with any questions about available materials.

Are there restrictions on the use of borrowed materials?

Any use restrictions will be clearly indicated on the blue band of all borrowed material. The lending library may stipulate that use of an item be restricted to the library and it may prohibit all photocopying of the item. Interlibrary Loan is a courtesy provided by the lending library and any conditions of use imposed by that library must be strictly observed. Disregarding restrictions may result in cancellation of interlibrary loan service to the patron.

Long-term use of borrowed material is prohibited, with the exception of materials from the Center for Research Libraries, which have unlimited loan periods.

What happens when my loaned materials are overdue?

Borrowed items kept overdue by patrons create critical problems for Interlibrary Loan service. Lending libraries may cease to lend to our institution until all overdue material is returned. Costly fines and replacement fees could also be incurred. Items kept extremely overdue will result in a $20 fine from UK Libraries and a block of your use of the ILLiad service until the overdue is resolved.

Does ILLiad track my request history?

Current, finished, and canceled requests are logged in ILLiad, but please note that data is periodically purged from the system, so it is your responsibility to save any request information that you would like to keep as a permanent reference.
