Bert T. Combs Appalachian Collection

The Bert T. Combs Appalachian Collection contains over 10,000 book and journal titles, along with materials documenting regional economic development and labor strife, including the records of land, railroad, coal, and lumber companies; the records of anti-poverty agencies, community activist groups, and rural health organizations; and the papers of the region’s writers, artists, and musicians. Major collections include: 

• James Still Correspondence Database – letters received by Still and copies of his outgoing correspondence, in some cases
• Harriett Simpson Arnow Papers – materials documenting Arnow’s writing process, including early drafts and correspondence with family, editors, and publishers, as well as photographs and political materials 
• Anne and Harry M. Caudill Collection – over 100 archival boxes of photographs, subject files, correspondence, manuscripts, and research materials
