Reimagining Russia's Realms

About

From a multi-ethnic empire to the first self-proclaimed communist state, Russia claims a place in the world imagination.  The diverse historical, geographical, and cultural spaces of the former Russian Empire, the former Soviet Union and its successor states in Central Asia, the Baltic and the Caucasus, and contemporary Russia have produced shifting identities while projecting global power and influence.

This year UK's Arts & Sciences Passport to the World program embarks on Reimagining Russia’s Realms. The focus is on three themes encompassing aspects shared by the United States and Russia:

  • the challenges of governing diverse peoples while overseeing dynamic (and changing) geographic territories
  • the pursuit of internal and external security
  • an abundance of creativity and innovation.

The integration and interplay of the arts, history, literature, religion, geography, the social and environmental sciences, mathematics, engineering, and technology will enable students, faculty, alumni, and members of the community and the Commonwealth to more fully realize that Russia embodies so much more than images of Vladimir Lenin or Vladimir Putin convey, or its impressive sprawl across nine time zones (!) on the Eurasian land mass.

By developing these themes, and offering an attractive variety of events drawing on the richness to be found in Russia and its historical realms, we hope to find ways to discover and explore, on a human scale, the common ground our nations share, while we investigate and celebrate the instructive nature of our differences.

Listen to a podcast by Jeanmarie Rouhier-WilloughbyChair of the Department of Modern & Classical Languages, Literatures & Cultures, and Karen PetroneChair of the Department of History as they discuss  what makes the region unique, why it is important to study, and what various departments and faculty will bring to UK to Reimagine Russia’s Realms.

UK Libraries will be mounting exhibits and providing programming throughout the year as we reimagine Russia's realms.
