Chemical Abstracts (CA) includes extensive coverage of general chemistry and chemistry-related disciplines such as biochemistry, materials science, physical chemistry, pharmacy and chemical engineering. It indexes over 8,000 journals, patents worldwide, technical reports, conference proceedings, books, and dissertations, and contains over 16 million abstracts. In addition, it provides compound identification. The registry file contains more than 22 million substance records, including more than 16 million organic compounds and 3 million biosequences. In an average working day, CAS adds approximately 2,500 document records and 11,000 substance registrations.

SciFinder contains abstracts and structures. See the SciFinder Scholar website for additional information.

Please remember to run your searches in Reaxys. The two databases cover different time periods and are complementary. Neither one alone provides a complete chemical search.

One may search by:

  • Chemical Substance or Reaction: Explore chemical substances by chemical name, chemical structure, formulas, or CAS Registry Numbers.
  • Research Topic
  • Author Name
  • Specific Reference: Find literature by CA abstract number or patent number.

With SciFinder Scholar, you can also:

  • Get reactions, starting from structures of interest
  • Find specific CA journal or patent abstracts by entering the abstract or patent numbers
  • Refine your answer set by author name, document type, or publication year

  4. How to Download EBSCO eBooks to Portable Devices
    • Download an eBook EBSCO title by clicking on the “Download” link on the search result page or from within the detailed record
    • Select your preferred checkout period and click “Checkout & Download”
    • Drag and drop the title icon to your portable device
    • Read your eBook on your portable device*

*In order for a portable device to be used with EBSCO eBooks, it must be compatible with Adobe® Digital Editions. For example, see the iPad YouTube video instructions or the Android device bluefire instructions.

    See EBSCOhost's Download support page.

To "Close" an eBook so that it is available to others:

  • In the top right corner, use Exit OR
  • In the top left corner, use <<Back
  • In the top left corner, use New Search

Clicking "Detailed Record" or "Return to Search" if you are on the detailed record page does not actually close the book. If the book is left idle for 30 minutes, it will time out on its own, but using one of the above methods eliminates any delay for other users.

Checking in an Ebook

Downloaded eBooks can be checked-in before the end of the checkout period using Adobe Digital Editions.

Audiobooks cannot be checked-in before the end of the checkout period at this time. Audiobooks files can be transferred to various devices throughout the duration of the checkout period, and there is no way to ensure that the file is removed from these devices before it ends.

  3. Click Return Borrowed Item.
  4. Click the Return button to confirm you would like to return the eBook.
  5. The eBook is checked in and removed from your Library View screen and is available to other patrons.

For users who have upgraded to Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 or 4.0

To check-in an eBook before the checkout period had expired:

  1. Open Adobe Digital Editions on your computer.
  2. On the Bookshelfs screen of Adobe Digital Editions, right-click the cover of the eBook you would like to check-in and select Return Borrowed Item.
  3. Click the Return button to confirm you would like to return the eBook.
  4. The eBook is checked in and removed from your Bookshelves view screen and is available to other patrons.
