The Archives documents Kentucky through primary source materials in the following areas:

The Audio-Visual Archives collects, preserves and provides access to still photographs, moving images and sound recordings that document the history of Kentucky. Central and eastern Kentucky are heavily represented in the family, studio and institutional photograph, local radio and television and independent film collections.  Major collections include the John C. Wyatt Lexington Herald-Leader photographs and Lafayette Studios.

Manuscripts contains collections of family papers, diaries, church records, business records, papers of Kentucky authors, genealogical collections, 20th century political collections of national importance, nineteenth century manuscripts, and historical materials relating to Kentucky and the Ohio Valley. 

The Bert T. Combs Appalachian Collection contains over 10,000 book and journal titles. It also includes the records of land, railroad, coal and lumber companies, anti-poverty agencies, and community activist groups, as well as collections documenting labor strife, economic development, and rural health, and the papers of the region’s writers, artists, and musicians.Prominent collections include James Still, Harriette Arnow and Harry Caudill.

The Wendell H. Ford Public Policy Research Center preserves the history of Kentucky politics and government. The University of Kentucky Libraries has built one of the finest and most thorough bipartisan collections for public policy research in the United States. Use of the collection in publications by scholars nationally and internationally testifies to its research value. The UK Libraries Public Policy Archives is nationally recognized as one of the finest regional political collections repositories in the United States.

University Archives and Records Program preserves the documentary evidence of the history of the University of Kentucky, provides assistance and information to patrons researching the history of the institution, and administers the Records Program of the University. The University Archives contains the Big Blue Sports Archives which documents the legacy and culture of UK Athletics.
