The lounge area at the top of the stairs around the rotunda on the 2nd floor is the UK Faculty, Staff, and Student Atrium. This area has wireless Internet connectivity. Wireless laptops are available for student checkout in the basement, in Audio Visual Services.
Second Floor Rotunda
The 42 feet high circular reading room directly over the 1st floor circulation desk is the Toyota Rotunda Reading Room. It contains the Scott and Greenslade Collections (Russian military and history materials). The solid oak reading room tables, typical of the 291 tables found throughout the building, were custom-designed to provide network and electrical connections for laptop computers.
Reference Services (North Wing)
Columbia-HCA Reference Services is in the North Wing. The computers on the tables in this area provide access to the Internet where you can access the Libraries' catalog and electronic resources. The area behind the Reference Desk contains the Research Consultation Center, where you can work with librarians to fill your research needs. Any questions, particularly those pertaining to the use of the University of Kentucky Library System and its materials and services, may be asked at the Reference Desk.
Periodicals Area (East Wing)
The GTE Periodicals area is in the East Wing of the second floor. It contains equipment needed to read and print microforms. The area behind the Periodicals Desk houses a large staff area as well as the libraries' microform collections, one of the largest in the country. The staff at the desk will assist you with and retrieve microforms for you. The periodicals area also houses a large collection of state, national, and international newspapers.
Microform reader/printers are available in front of the Periodical Desk that also permit you to scan images from microfilm, then e-mail the images, burn them to a CD (you will need to provide your own CD), or save them to a flash drive. Copies are 12 cents per page.
Kentucky Newspapers (South Wing)
The Knight Foundation Newspaper Reading room overlooks University Drive. The University of Kentucky subscribes to almost every Kentucky newspaper; the most recent issues of some of these newspapers are available here. Older issues are on microfilm and can be obtained from the periodicals desk.
General Reference Collection (West Wing)
The general reference collection contains materials that are factual in nature and designed to answer specific questions. Subject-specific encyclopedias, English and foreign language dictionaries, biographical information, and compilations of literary criticism are some of the resources located in the general reference collection.
The staff at the reference desk will gladly assist you in finding the information you need. Although reference materials do not circulate, pages may be photocopied.
