About the MCL

Mission & Roles

MCL Mission

The mission of the UK Medical Center Library is to provide our users* with the information and information seeking skills essential for health care education, research, and evidence-based patient care and to promote health information literacy.

*Our users include students, clinical faculty, research faculty, health care professionals, hospital staff, patients and families both inside the University of Kentucky system and throughout the commonwealth (as mandated by our status as an Outreach Library for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine).

MCL Roles 2016

The University of Kentucky Medical Center Library (MCL) serves the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, Health Sciences, and Public Health. In addition, the MCL is responsible for providing services to University Hospitals and Clinics, plus the interdisciplinary research areas of Markey Cancer Center, Sanders-Brown Center of Aging, Gill Heart Institute, and the Center for Clinical and Translational Science.

Librarians at the MCL are involved in supporting the needs of users and in working with faculty to provide curriculum-based classes designed to help users learn to use library resources efficiently and improve their research skills. Regularly scheduled open enrollment classes, as well as individualized instruction, are provided. In addition, librarians perform mediated database searches using multiple electronic information resources.

Librarians also serve as liaisons to the six colleges, various departments, centers, and groups within the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Liaisons are active in developing the library collection, supporting the curriculum, and improving library services. Liaisons offer instruction in their specific service areas and assist with simple and complex research questions. Liaisons are also available for consultations on clinical, research, and educational issues.
