Full-text of over 600 U.S. newspapers, including the Lexington Herald-Leader (1983 - present) and other Kentucky newspapers. Access World News also covers over 1,300 foreign English-language news resources, including the following newspapers:

  • The Times (London)
  • China Daily
  • Times of India
  • The Nation from Kenya

Spanish-language editions of the newspapers are also included, such as the Miami Herald's El nuevo herald. Access World News also includes newswires and news magazines, with a total of nearly 2,400 titles. Newspapers include all articles except records lists (e.g., births, police reports) and PAID obituaries.

ARTstor offers tools that enable users to create personal folders and then share contents of those folders with other University users in a password-protected environment. The Offline Image Viewer, which is downloadable to the user's desktop, allows the import of ARTstor images as well as images from other sources to create a slideshow comparable to, but more functional than, a PowerPoint presentation.

ARTstor will interoperate with learning management systems like WebCT and Blackboard by allowing users to create stable URLs that permit linking from a learning management system or course website to ARTstor images or image groups.

To obtain full access to ARTstor, users should register and create individual logons by clicking in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Instructors who want to create shared image folders should contact the Fine Arts Library (257-2800) or Design Library (257-4305) to receive the necessary authorization codes.

Includes references to U.S., Canadian, British, and other European dissertations and theses, with detailed abstracts. Each dissertation published since July 1980 includes a 350-word abstract written by the author. Master's theses published since 1988 include 150-word abstracts. Many of the publications also provide the full-text of the first 24 pages. Most of the dissertations entered since 1997 are full-text.

You can also purchase copies through the database if full-text PDFs are not available for download, but most items can be borrowed from other institutions (see below). University of Kentucky dissertations and theses are available in paper in the libraries' collections; search for them in InfoKat, the libraries' online catalog. These listings are more current than those in Proquest. A few dissertations and theses from other institutions are also available in paper or microform in the libraries' collections and can be found in InfoKat.

You can request items through Interlibrary Loan if you are affiliated with the University of Kentucky. Nearly all master's theses are available for loan, as well as many dissertations. To make an Interlibrary Loan request, you will need to have established an ILLiad account. You can find many of the publications from ProQuest Dissertations and Theses in WorldCat and make your request through that database. Medical Center Library Users Please Note: please use the Medical Center Library's ILLiad service for your Interlibrary Loan requests.

Checking in an Ebook

Downloaded eBooks can be checked-in before the end of the checkout period using Adobe Digital Editions.

Audiobooks cannot be checked-in before the end of the checkout period at this time. Audiobooks files can be transferred to various devices throughout the duration of the checkout period, and there is no way to ensure that the file is removed from these devices before it ends.

To check-in an eBook before the checkout period had expired (using Adobe Digital Editions):

  • Open Adobe Digital Editions on your computer.
  • On the Library View screen of Adobe Digital Editions, hold your pointer over the eBook you would like to check-in and click the arrow in the top left corner.
  • Click Return Borrowed Item.
  • Click the Return button to confirm you would like to return the eBook.
  • The eBook is checked in and removed from your Library View screen and is available to other patrons.
  • For users who have upgraded to Adobe Digital Editions 2.0

    2. Select the Checkout period (7 days) from the drop-down menu and click the Checkout & Download button.

      The eBook will be added to the Checkouts area of the folder. If you are not logged into your My EBSCOhost folder, you will be prompted to do so.

    3. How to View EBSCO eBooks on Your Computer through the Web-Based Interface
      • Download an EBSCO eBook title by clicking on the “Download” link on the search result page or from within the detailed record
      • Select your preferred checkout period and click “Checkout & Download”
      • eBook is downloaded and viewable via Adobe® Digital Editions* on your computer.

    4. How to Download EBSCO eBooks to Portable Devices
      • Download an eBook EBSCO title by clicking on the “Download” link on the search result page or from within the detailed record
      • Select your preferred checkout period and click “Checkout & Download”
      • Drag and drop the title icon to your portable device
      • Read your eBook on your portable device*

      *In order for a portable device to be used with EBSCO eBooks, it must be compatible with Adobe® Digital Editions. For example, see the iPad YouTube video instructions or the Android device bluefire instructions.

    To "Close" an eBook so that it is available to others:

    • In the top right corner, use Exit OR
    • In the top left corner, use <<Back
    • In the top left corner, use New Search

    Clicking "Detailed Record" or "Return to Search" if you are on the detailed record page does not actually close the book. If the book is left idle for 30 minutes, it will time out on its own, but using one of the above methods eliminates any delay for other users.

    If a new PDF opens each time you turn the page of an eBook in the eBook viewer in EBSCOhost, this can be corrected by changing a setting in Adobe Reader. To ensure eBooks are displayed in the eBook viewer in the browser window:
     
    1.    Launch Adobe Reader.
    2.    Click the Edit menu in the toolbar at the top of Adobe Reader.
    3.    Select Preferences from the drop-down list of options.
    4.    Select Internet in the left-column of the resulting menu.
    5.    Mark the check box Display PDF in browser.
    6.    Click OK.

Electronic resources are indicated by Radio buttons to the right of the Search Box (E-books or Print) permit you to limit your results to one format at a time. The system defaults to search both formats unless you choose another specific format in a subsequent search. On the second line of each search result you'll see links to view articles or index terms for both print and e-books.
