Description:

Consists of 19th century newspapers specially selected by the British Library to best represent 19th century Britain. Includes national and regional newspapers (e.g.,  those from both established country or university towns and the new industrial areas of the manufacturing Midlands) as well as publications from Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Special attention was paid to newspapers that helped lead particular political or social movements such as Reform, Chartism, and Home Rule. The penny papers aimed at the working and clerical classes are also present in the collection. Also available in the Gale NewsVault, a searchable collection of historical newspapers. You can also perform a combined search of this database with the 17th and 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers Digital Archive Backfile.
