The UK Libraries Undergraduate Diversity Scholars will participate in, develop, and lead library-related and/or library-sponsored projects, activities, and research that will promote the educational benefits of diversity, multicultural awareness, and inclusivity among UK students, staff, and faculty. Through work within a number of UK Libraries units, the Diversity Scholars will become familiar with a variety of academic library-related career options.
Internship Description and Requirements
-Curate diversity-themed library displays and help plan diversity-themed events.
-Interact with various library units, learning that unit’s work and assisting with projects, particularly through a lens of increasing diversity in research libraries.
-Develop and initiate research projects to enhance diversity goals. Present to UK Libraries faculty and staff and share your research online.
-Assist library committees, task forces, and/or working groups with diversity-related activities and events.
-Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
-Oral and written communication skills
-Organizational and problem-solving skills
-Working knowledge of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
-UK sophomore, junior, or senior status with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. All majors are eligible.
-Demonstrated commitment to diversity issues.
-Commitment to full-academic year participation in Diversity Scholar Program.
-Eligibility for employment at UK (I-9 documentation and pre-employment background checks are required for new employees).
Salary, Hours, Schedule
$8.80 per hour; 10-15 hours per week on average; schedule to be determined between UK Libraries supervisors and the Diversity interns. (Most Libraries units require the 10-15 hours of work to be scheduled at times between 8 am and 5 pm, weekdays only.) The Undergraduate Diversity Scholar Program Internship will begin in September 2019 and end in May 2020, coinciding with the 2019-2020 academic calendar.
2. The application form will include space for a short personal essay (500 words) in which applicants should describe their interest in promoting diversity in academic libraries; their actions and commitment to ideas of equity, diversity, and inclusivity; and their ability to work in the UK Libraries setting.
3. Applicants will also need a letter of recommendation from one person (not a relative of the applicant) who is acquainted with the applicant’s skills, abilities, aptitude, diversity activities, and commitment. Deadline for submission of the completed recommendation letters is also September 15, 2019. These letters will be addressed and emailed to Jen Martin, chair of the UK Libraries Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity Committee: jen (dot) martin (at) uky (dot) edu.
4. Applications will be reviewed during April 2019. Selected finalists will be contacted for interviews over the phone or in person on campus.
5. The top two finalists of those interviewed will be offered internships for the 2019-20 year. We're looking forward to reading your applications and meeting our next group of interns!
